Eye Spy: Sol y Luna Nesting Trays

What do nesting trays and a vintage Volkswagen Beetle have in common? Both have been wrapped in luxurious leather by virtuosic Spanish studio Sol & Luna.

Having just celebrated their 20th anniversary, Sol & Luna marked the milestone by reflecting on their journey as a company, committed to the twin peaks of contemporary design and luxury craftsmanship. What began as a business opportunity—to invest in a cattle ranch in the jungle of the remote Chaco region of Paraguay—has since become a life calling: to honor the generational talents and sustainable practices of leather artisans through timeless pieces informed by contemporary design. “We started 20 years ago turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, crafting simple items that turned into authentic objects of desire,” says founder Carolina Sanchez de Movellan. Committed to extolling the virtues of leather, Sol & Luna has transformed seemingly mundane objects into beloved heirlooms and museum-worthy treasures, “from thermoses, ice buckets, trays, and chairs to unique pieces like a watering can (chosen as ‘Most Wanted’ by Architectural Digest), a bicycle, a car entirely lined inside and out in natural leather. It has been a long journey in which we have had a great team of professionals supporting us,” Sanchez de Movellan says.

For our part, we obsess over Sol & Luna’s nesting trays: the hand-stitched silhouettes elevate any surface upon which they are placed, transforming the mundane need for a common catchall into a graceful expression of style. The care taken during the tanning process—treating hides with only organic ingredients, never chemicals—leads to leather rich with character. Color variations, graining and briar marks underscore the natural resiliency of the cattle themselves; their lives lived and now honored in treasured keepsakes that soften and strengthen over time. Each piece is as unique as the animals from which the leather came.
